The Needful Guide to the UAE
The United Arab Emirates is not one destination — it is two cities, a desert, and a question of how to spend your time between them. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are separated by 140 kilometres of highway and a quietly significant gap in ambition: Dubai trades in spectacle; Abu Dhabi in substance. Both are superb bases for luxury travel, and neither is complete without the other.
This guide pulls together everything we have written about the UAE, curated by programme and purpose.
Dubai
Dubai’s skyline is the most recognisable in the world. What Dubai offers that nowhere else does is the sheer density of world-class luxury hotels, fine dining, and beach clubs within a city that functions, broadly, as a western capital with better weather.

Abu Dhabi
Forty minutes by road from Dubai, Abu Dhabi operates at a different frequency — quieter, more considered, and often overlooked. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Saadiyat Island’s miles of natural beach, and a luxury hotel market that consistently delivers better value than Dubai’s.

The Desert
The UAE’s desert is one of the world’s great luxury secrets. Within an hour of either city, you can be in a private villa with a pool overlooking red dunes, waking to silence and the sound of falcons.

How to Structure a UAE Trip
4 nights: Dubai base only. Fly into DXB, stay at Bulgari or Four Seasons Jumeirah, one night at a desert resort.
7 nights: 3 nights Dubai → 2 nights desert (Al Maha or Bab Al Shams) → 2 nights Abu Dhabi (Emirates Palace or Rosewood).
10 nights: Add Ras Al Khaimah (Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi). Fly into DXB, out of AUH.
Programme tip: If you hold Marriott Bonvoy status, this circuit is unbeatable — STARS properties anchor Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Al Maha adds the desert, and the points earn across the trip is among the best in the programme globally.
