The Best Months to Visit Asia: A Month-by-Month Weather Guide (2026)
Asia is not one climate — it is dozens, and they do not align. Thailand's two coastlines run opposite seasons. Vietnam changes character every 500 kilometres from north to south. Japan stretches from Hokkaido powder snow to Okinawa subtropical heat. Here is the month-by-month read, destination by destination.
The single most common planning error is treating a country as a single weather zone. When Phuket and Krabi on Thailand's Andaman coast are at their wettest, Koh Samui on the Gulf of Thailand is often dry — and the reverse holds six months later. Vietnam runs on three different seasonal clocks from north to south. Japan's rainy season hits Tokyo hard in June but largely spares Hokkaido. Fix the destination-and-month pairing and you bank a week of clear skies. Get it wrong and you are indoors.
The grid below rates each destination by weather alone — not crowds or price. Green = ideal (dry, comfortable). Amber = shoulder or mixed — heat, humidity, haze or passing rain. Red = avoid: monsoon, typhoon season or extreme heat.

Country by country
Japan
Tokyo and Kyoto have two peak windows: late March to May (cherry blossom) and October to November (autumn colour). Winter is cold but bright and clear. Avoid June — the tsuyu rainy season averages 165mm in Tokyo — and August, when humidity sits above 80% and typhoons track along the coast. Hokkaido runs to a different logic: a ski destination January–February (Niseko's average snowfall exceeds eight metres per season) that largely skips the rainy season entirely, making it one of the most reliable summer escapes in northeast Asia. Okinawa is the beach option — best in March to early May and October–November, with a distinct rainy season in June and real typhoon exposure from July to September.
Greater China & Taiwan
Beijing is a continental climate, with bitter dry winters and hot wet summers — spring (late April–May) and the golden autumn (September–October) are the only genuinely pleasant windows. Shanghai adds June plum rains and a humid, typhoon-prone summer to the same pattern; spring and October are correct. Hong Kong is at its best October to December and into the cool dry early year; the summer brings heat, humidity and a serious typhoon season — direct hits are infrequent but disruptive. Taipei is the wettest of the four year-round; late October–November is the reliable window.
Thailand
Sub-regional distinctions matter more in Thailand than almost anywhere else in Asia. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are best November–February, cool and dry; Chiang Mai in March–April is affected by agricultural burning and haze that can reduce visibility significantly. On the coasts, the two seas are completely out of sync: the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is driest November–April; the Gulf coast (Koh Samui) is drier through that period and takes its heaviest rain in October–November. Vietnam
Vietnam's three regions share a country but not a climate. The north (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa) peaks in spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November); mid-winter is cool and often overcast. The centre (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang) is excellent February–August, then enters a distinct flood season September–November — Hoi An has flooded to first-floor level in bad years. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) is dry and warm December–April and wet May–October. March–April and November are the closest Vietnam has to a nationwide safe window. Cambodia & Laos
Both follow the mainland Southeast Asian monsoon, and November–February is the target: cool, dry and clear — ideal for Angkor Wat at dawn, Luang Prabang's temple circuit and the Mekong. March–May turns very hot, and northern Laos is subject to a burning-season haze in March–April. The southwest monsoon dominates June–October, peaking around September. One counterintuitive note: Angkor in November, just after the rains clear, is at its lushest, moat-filled best, and the temples are far quieter than in peak season.
Indonesia (Bali) & Singapore
Bali has a clean binary split: dry season April–September (July–August driest and busiest) and wet season October–March, peaking December–February with 300mm or more per month in some areas. Singapore sits on the equator — warm and humid throughout the year, with no season that warrants avoiding. The northeast monsoon (November–January) brings heavier rain, usually in short intense downpours rather than all-day grey; the main caveat is a regional haze risk from Sumatran fires in August–September that can be severe in bad years.
India & Sri Lanka
North India (Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan) is at its best October–March; April–June temperatures in Delhi regularly exceed 44°C, and the monsoon soaks July–September. Kerala and south India follow a similar monsoon but are somewhat milder in winter. Sri Lanka is effectively two destinations in one — the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle) are at their best December–March, while the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) runs the mirror image, peaking May–September. The Maldives
Included here because so many Asia itineraries end with a beach extension: the Maldives' dry northeast-monsoon season runs December–April (calm seas, 30-metre-plus visibility for diving), while May–November is wetter, with September–October the least reliable period. The short version
If your dates are fixed, the grid shows where they work; if your destination is fixed, it shows when to go. As general rules: November–February is prime for mainland Southeast Asia, North India and Hong Kong. Spring and autumn are the reliable windows for Japan and China. April–September belongs to Bali; December–April to the Maldives. In Thailand, the month determines the coast — not the other way around. When two destinations appeal equally, your travel dates usually break the tie.

Japan cherry blossom. 2026 forecasts trended earlier (a warm year); for early blooms that beat the crowds, Kawazu on the Izu Peninsula peaks in late February. Members increasingly steer away from packed spots like Ueno toward smaller regional locations (to May 2026).
Typhoon season. The August–September typhoon window across Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Philippines rarely ruins a whole trip, but it does disrupt flights — build a buffer day around any tight connection, and favour refundable rates in those months (2025–26).
