Dubai and Abu Dhabi are separated by 140 kilometres of highway and a quietly significant gap in ambition: Dubai trades in spectacle; Abu Dhabi in substance. Both are superb bases for luxury travel, and neither is complete without the other. This guide pulls together everything we have written about the UAE, by city, desert and purpose.
Dubai
Dubai's skyline is the most recognisable in the world. What it offers that nowhere else does is the sheer density of world-class luxury hotels, fine dining and beach clubs within a city that functions, broadly, as a Western capital with better weather.

Abu Dhabi
Forty minutes by road from Dubai, Abu Dhabi operates at a different frequency — quieter, more considered, and often overlooked. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Saadiyat Island's miles of natural beach, and a luxury hotel market that consistently delivers better value than Dubai's.

The desert

How to structure a UAE trip
Four nights: Dubai base only. Fly into DXB, stay at Bulgari or Four Seasons Jumeirah, and add one night at a desert resort.
Seven nights: three nights Dubai, then two nights in the desert (Al Maha or Bab Al Shams), then two nights Abu Dhabi (Emirates Palace or Rosewood).
Ten nights: add Ras Al Khaimah (Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi). Fly into DXB, out of AUH.

Dubai moves to know. Mandarin Oriental Downtown opened, Park Hyatt Dubai closes for most of 2026 to renovate, Sofitel the Palm rebrands to Leela, and the former Oberoi Al Zorah is becoming a Four Seasons (late 2025–2026).
Qasr Al Sarab logistics. The resort sits roughly two to two-and-a-half hours from Abu Dhabi airport by road, deep in the Empty Quarter — private transfers run in the region of AED 850 one-way. Treat it as a short desert add-on rather than a day trip.
