Where to Stay in Vietnam, Part 1: The Major Cities — Saigon & Hanoi (2026)
Part 1 of our area-by-area Vietnam series. Vietnam's two great cities are a study in contrasts — fast, French-flecked Saigon in the south and graceful, lake-laced Hanoi in the north. Here's where to stay in each, ranked, with our honest verdicts and perks added.
This is the first instalment of our guide to where to stay in Vietnam, area by area. Most itineraries begin or end in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) or Hanoi — they're the international gateways and the cultural bookends of the country — so getting your city base right matters. Neither city has a deep bench of true five-star hotels the way Bangkok or Singapore does, but the best are genuinely world-class, and a couple are among the most characterful in Southeast Asia.
Rates below are indicative nightly figures for a lead room in mid-season, in US dollars (Vietnam prices in dong; roughly 24,000 VND = US$1). They climb around Tet (Lunar New Year, late January–February) and the cooler Nov–Apr peak.
Insider verdicts throughout are our own, informed by the long-running FlyerTalk luxury-travel threads — the praise and the caveats — so you get the honest picture, not the brochure.
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
The Park Hyatt for classic, calm, colonial-style luxury — the safe best choice. The Reverie if you want drama, a club lounge and high-floor views; Hotel des Arts for the best-value rooftop stay.
Park Hyatt Saigon Hyatt Privé perks
The grande dame of Saigon luxury, the Park Hyatt sits on Lam Son Square beside the Opera House in the heart of District 1 — a creamy French-colonial-style building wrapped around a third-floor garden and pool that feels like an urban resort shielded from the city's roar. Rooms are classic and generously sized, the service is the most polished in the city, and Square One and the Park Lounge are institutions. It's understated rather than flashy, which is exactly the point. From ~US$280–460.
The Reverie Saigon Virtuoso perks
The Reverie is Saigon's maximalist spectacle — a riot of Italian marble, gilt and Murano glass high in the Times Square tower, with sweeping views over the Saigon River and a coveted club lounge. It's a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, the rooms are large and lavish, and the high floors are genuinely dramatic. Whether it's your taste is another question. From ~US$250–420.
Hotel des Arts Saigon, MGallery Accor Preferred perks
A love letter to 1930s Indochine glamour, Hotel des Arts is an art-collector's hotel a short walk from the Opera House, topped by the Social Club rooftop pool and bar — one of the best sundowner perches in the city. Rooms are richly styled, the vibe is boutique and design-led, and it prices well below the flagships. The standout value pick in town. From ~US$150–230.
The Myst Dong Khoi Virtuoso perks
An independent boutique tucked near the river end of Dong Khoi, The Myst trades on character: reclaimed-timber and greenery-clad architecture, a small rooftop pool with cathedral and river views, and a personal, indie feel the big hotels can't replicate. Compact rooms and a buzzy neighbourhood; a charmer for travellers who prize personality over scale. From ~US$150–220.
Hanoi
Capella Hanoi — the best hotel in the city right now, and our clear recommendation. The Metropole for living history (book the Heritage Wing); the InterContinental Westlake for lakeside calm and value. (Watch this space: a Four Seasons is slated for Hoan Kiem Lake in 2026.)
Capella Hanoi Virtuoso perks
Bill Bensley's opera-themed jewel near the Opera House is the most exciting hotel in Hanoi — just 47 individually designed rooms drenched in theatrical, maximalist detail, with the Michelin-recognised Hibana by Koki omakase and the moody Diva's Lounge. It is small, intensely designed, and run with service that belies how new it is. From ~US$400–700.
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Accor Preferred perks
Open since 1901 and a Hanoi landmark in its own right, the Metropole is steeped in history — the Bamboo Bar, Le Beaulieu, the wartime bomb shelter beneath the courtyard, and a guest book running from Charlie Chaplin to Graham Greene. The Historical (Heritage) Wing has the real character; the Opera Wing is the modern five-star option. From ~US$350–600.
InterContinental Hanoi Westlake IHG Luxury & Lifestyle perks
Built out over West Lake on stilted pavilions, the InterContinental Westlake is the calm, scenic alternative to the Old Quarter — sunset-facing over-water rooms, the Sunset Bar on its own island, and a 15-minute hop to the centre. Less buzzy, more breathing room, and strong value with IHG recognition. From ~US$180–280.

How to choose
In Saigon, the Park Hyatt is the safe, classic answer and our overall pick; choose the Reverie if you want drama and a club lounge, or Hotel des Arts for the best value and the best rooftop. In Hanoi, Capella is the clear standout for design and service, the Metropole is for those who want to sleep inside Hanoi's history, and the InterContinental Westlake is the calm, good-value lakeside base — with a Four Seasons due on Hoan Kiem Lake in 2026 that we'll add once it opens. Most travellers pair a city stay with the coast or the mountains; see the full Vietnam series hub for how the areas fit together.
