Where to Stay in Vietnam, Part 2: The Smaller Cities & Towns (2026)
Part 2 of our area-by-area Vietnam series. Beyond the big cities, Vietnam's real magic is in its smaller places — lantern-lit Hoi An, imperial Hue, the cool pines of Da Lat, the rice-terrace mountains of Sapa and the karst countryside of Ninh Binh. Here's where to stay in each.
This is the second instalment of our guide to where to stay in Vietnam, area by area. These are the towns and landscapes that turn a good Vietnam trip into a memorable one. A word of honesty up front: outside Hoi An, true five-star inventory thins out fast — so rather than pad each area, we've listed only the places we'd actually send you, however many that is.
Rates are indicative nightly figures for a lead room in mid-season, in US dollars. They rise around Tet (late January–February) and, in Sapa and Da Lat, over domestic-holiday weekends.
Insider verdicts throughout are our own, informed by the long-running FlyerTalk luxury-travel threads.
Hoi An (the old town)
Anantara Hoi An for the riverside-in-town location; Hotel Royal for an MGallery pool stay; La Siesta for the warmest service at the best price. (For beachfront resorts near Hoi An — the Nam Hai and the Da Nang strip — see Part 3a.)
Anantara Hoi An Resort Virtuoso perks
The pick of the in-town stays, Anantara sits right on the Thu Bon riverbank a few minutes' walk from the lantern-lit Ancient Town — colonial-style low-rise buildings around a garden and pool, with generous balconied rooms and a genuinely good restaurant. You get Hoi An on your doorstep but retreat to calm and a pool when the day-trippers arrive. From ~US$180–300.
Hotel Royal Hoi An, MGallery Accor Preferred perks
A polished riverside MGallery a short stroll from the old town, the Hotel Royal blends Japanese-Hoianese heritage styling with a proper resort pool, the Faifo rooftop and a strong spa. It's the most facilities-rich hotel in central Hoi An, and a reliable Accor stay with recognition. From ~US$150–230.
La Siesta Hoi An Resort & Spa Book with us
A boutique charmer that consistently tops Hoi An's review rankings for one reason: service. Lush gardens, two pools, an excellent spa and a team that remembers your name — all at a price that undercuts the bigger names. Rooms are comfortable rather than cutting-edge, but the warmth is the draw. From ~US$120–180.
Hue
Azerai La Residence — comfortably the best stay in Hue, and one of the loveliest heritage hotels in the country.
Azerai La Residence, Hue Virtuoso perks
Adrian Zecha's Azerai took over the former 1930s residence of the French governor on the banks of the Perfume River, facing the Imperial Citadel — an art-deco mansion with a 40-metre saltwater pool, riverside dining at Le Parfum, and 122 rooms restored in warm colonial style. It is far and away the most characterful and comfortable hotel in Hue. From ~US$150–250.
Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort & Spa Book with us
A leafy, lantern-strung wellness retreat on the edge of town, Pilgrimage Village is the antidote to Hue's heat — gardens, a couple of pools, yoga and a well-regarded spa, in a calm setting a short drive from the sights. Not luxury in the polished sense, but a lovely, restorative base. From ~US$90–140.
Sapa (the northern mountains)
Hotel de la Coupole for in-town comfort and design; Topas Ecolodge if the view and the remoteness are the whole point.
Hotel de la Coupole, MGallery Accor Preferred perks
Bill Bensley's riot of colour in the heart of Sapa town, de la Coupole channels French-colonial-meets-hill-tribe maximalism, with a heated indoor pool, a good spa and the comfort that matters in Sapa's cool, misty climate. Steps from the Fansipan cable car. The most comfortable, design-led base in town. From ~US$120–200.
Topas Ecolodge Book with us
For the view of a lifetime, Topas is a cluster of white-granite bungalows on a remote ridge about an hour from Sapa town, overlooking terraced valleys with an infinity pool that hangs over the drop. It's eco-luxury, not full-service luxury — the point is the silence, the stars and the scenery. From ~US$200–350.
Da Lat (the highlands)
Ana Mandara Villas for the restored-villa charm; the Dalat Palace for grande-dame history. Da Lat is thin on true luxury, so these two are the standouts rather than a deep field.
Ana Mandara Villas Dalat Book with us
A village of 1920s–30s French colonial villas restored into a hillside resort, Ana Mandara is the most charming stay in the highlands — fireplaces, period furnishings, a spa and pool, and Da Lat's cool-climate calm. Some villas can be booked whole for families or groups. From ~US$120–180.
Dalat Palace Heritage Hotel Book with us
The 1922 grande dame overlooking Xuan Huong Lake, the Dalat Palace is all high ceilings, fireplaces and old-world bones. It has faded gently over the years, but for sheer historic atmosphere in the heart of Da Lat nothing else competes. From ~US$100–160.
Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh — the limestone-karst-and-river landscape often called "Halong Bay on land" — is genuinely thin on true luxury, and many travellers visit it as a day trip from Hanoi. If you do want to stay, the standout is the Tam Coc Garden Resort, a serene boutique bungalow retreat among the karsts and paddies (from ~US$120–180, booked with us). Emeralda Resort Ninh Binh is the larger, more family-friendly option (from ~US$90–140). Neither is five-star in the city sense, but Tam Coc Garden in particular is a lovely, peaceful base if you want a night among the scenery rather than a rushed day trip. Tell us your plans and we'll advise whether an overnight is worth it for your itinerary.

How to choose
In Hoi An, stay in town at Anantara for the Ancient Town on your doorstep — or decamp to the beach resorts in Part 3a if sand matters more than lanterns. Hue is a one-hotel town in the best way: book Azerai La Residence. In Sapa, choose de la Coupole for comfort in town or Topas for the view and the remoteness. Da Lat and Ninh Binh are about character over polish — lovely for a night or two woven into a longer route. See the Vietnam series hub for how to string these together, and our best months to visit Asia guide for timing the north.
